Acupuncture for stress and burnout Amsterdam

Burnout treatment Amsterdam clinics often focus on rest alone. However, pure rest rarely resolves the deeper issue. In fact, the nervous system stays stuck in survival mode for weeks. As a result, sleep stays broken and energy stays flat. At AlterPhysio, we combine physiotherapy and acupuncture into one clear recovery path. Moreover, we work alongside your huisarts and psychologist when needed. This article explains our 12-week protocol step by step.

Burnout treatment Amsterdam: the Dutch clinical context

The Dutch system makes a clear distinction. Specifically, overspannen means work-stress overload with daily-life impact. In contrast, burnout is the clinical end-stage of long overspannen. Furthermore, the huisarts is the first stop in most cases. Then, the GGD or bedrijfsarts often guides return-to-work planning.

Many patients arrive at our Amsterdam clinic in the middle of this pathway. For example, they may already have a sick-leave note. However, they still feel lost about the physical side of recovery. Therefore, we focus on the body while your medical team handles the rest.

Overspannen versus burnout: why the label matters

Overspannen can resolve in weeks with proper support. On the other hand, burnout often takes six to twelve months of structured care. Moreover, the autonomic nervous system shows deeper dysregulation in burnout. As a result, the treatment plan must be longer and more graded. Above all, the early phase must focus on calming, not pushing.

Why pure rest often fails

Many people expect a few weeks off to fix everything. However, the body does not work that way. Specifically, the sympathetic nervous system remains activated even when you stop working. As a result, you feel tired but wired at the same time. Furthermore, the brain keeps scanning for threats even on a quiet Sunday.

This explains why sleep stays broken on holiday. In addition, this explains why anxiety often rises after the first week off. Without active down-regulation, the system simply does not reset. Therefore, recovery needs targeted input, not just absence of work.

The stuck sympathetic state

Long stress shifts the baseline of the autonomic system. Specifically, the body learns that high alert is normal. As a result, the parasympathetic branch loses tone. Moreover, vagal pathways become less responsive to breath and rest. Consequently, you need direct stimulation to retrain them. For more depth, see our acupuncture for autonomic dysregulation page.

Physiological signs we look for

Burnout is not only a feeling. In fact, the body shows measurable changes. Therefore, we always start with a full intake covering four core systems. As a result, we can match the protocol to your actual state.

HRV collapse

Heart rate variability drops in chronic stress. Specifically, the gaps between heartbeats become more uniform. As a result, your body shows less adaptive capacity. Moreover, low HRV predicts poor sleep and slow recovery. Therefore, we use HRV as one of our key tracking markers.

Sleep fragmentation

You may fall asleep quickly from sheer exhaustion. However, you often wake between two and four in the morning. Furthermore, deep sleep stages shorten and dreams become intense. As a result, mornings feel heavy even after eight hours in bed. Our acupuncture for sleep protocol targets this exact pattern.

Somatic pain

Chronic tension shows up in the neck and jaw first. In addition, low back pain often appears with no clear injury. Moreover, the diaphragm becomes tight and breathing turns shallow. Consequently, the chest feels heavy and posture collapses forward.

Gut dysregulation

The gut is highly sensitive to vagal tone. Therefore, bloating and irregular stools are very common in burnout. Furthermore, appetite swings between very low and sudden cravings. As a result, energy from food becomes unstable through the day.

The 12-week combined protocol

Our burnout treatment Amsterdam framework runs over twelve weeks. Specifically, we split the path into three clear phases. Moreover, each phase has a different goal and pace. As a result, the body moves through recovery in a logical order. For the integrated approach, see our integrated physiotherapy and acupuncture page.

Phase 1: autonomic regulation (weeks 1-4)

The first four weeks focus only on calming the system. Specifically, we use acupuncture twice per week in this phase. Moreover, we target points that support parasympathetic activation. As a result, sleep often improves within the first two weeks. Our acupuncture for stress page explains the point selection in more detail.

Alongside acupuncture, we teach slow breathing retraining. Specifically, you learn to extend the exhale to twice the inhale length. Furthermore, we add gentle movement such as walking and mobility work. However, we avoid all high-intensity training in this phase. Above all, the goal is to lower the baseline, not push it.

Phase 2: graded load reintroduction (weeks 5-8)

By week five, the system usually shows clear signs of settling. For example, HRV begins to rise and sleep stabilises. Therefore, we start to reintroduce physical load in a graded way. However, the load stays well below your old training level.

Physiotherapy now leads the sessions, with acupuncture once per week. Specifically, we start with short strength sessions of twenty minutes. Moreover, we monitor morning HRV after each session. As a result, we catch any overload signs early. Consequently, we adjust the plan before symptoms return.

Phase 3: work re-integration (weeks 9-12)

The final phase prepares you for sustainable work. Specifically, we focus on pacing and energy management. Furthermore, we review your home and office ergonomics in detail. In addition, we discuss identity work and refer to a psychologist when needed. Above all, we plan for the first three months back at work.

Pacing means short focused blocks with real breaks. For example, fifty minutes of work followed by ten minutes away from the screen. Moreover, we plan one full recovery day per week. As a result, you learn a new rhythm rather than returning to the old one.

When to refer to other specialists

Burnout recovery is rarely a solo job. Therefore, we always work as part of a wider team. Moreover, we know our limits and refer when needed.

Psychology referral

Some patterns sit deeper than the nervous system. For example, perfectionism and people-pleasing often drive overspannen. Therefore, we refer to a psychologist for cognitive work. Furthermore, this work runs in parallel with our physical protocol.

Occupational medicine

The bedrijfsarts handles your formal return-to-work plan. Specifically, they decide on hours and tasks each week. Therefore, we share our findings with them when you give permission. As a result, the medical and physical plans stay aligned. Consequently, you avoid relapse during the return phase.

Start your recovery in Amsterdam

Burnout treatment Amsterdam should never feel like a guessing game. Instead, you need clear phases and clear markers. Moreover, you need a team that respects both body and mind. Therefore, our combined protocol gives structure to a confusing time. Above all, it gives you a path back to steady energy.

You can start with a single intake session at our clinic. Specifically, we map your nervous system, sleep, and physical state in one visit. Furthermore, we build your personal twelve-week plan from there. Ready to begin? Visit our contact page to book your first appointment.
