A Thoughtful, Integrated Approach to Health, Movement, and Recovery
A Thoughtful, Integrated Approach to Health, Movement, and Recovery. Located in Amsterdam Zuid, Alter Physio & Acupuncture is a clinic for people who want a deeper, long-term solution – not just a quick adjustment or temporary pain relief.
Health Is Not the Absence of Symptoms
At Alter Physio & Acupuncture, we do not define health simply as the absence of pain or symptoms.
Many people experience temporary relief, only to find that their symptoms return once treatment stops. This often happens when care focuses only on where symptoms appear, rather than why the body reached that state in the first place.
We believe health is better understood as the body’s ability to adapt, recover, and respond to daily demands—physically, mentally, and internally.
The Body Functions as a Connected System
Pain, tension, fatigue, and internal discomfort rarely exist in isolation.
Movement patterns influence stress on tissues.
Stress affects breathing, digestion, sleep, and muscle tone.
The nervous system shapes how the body reacts to both physical and emotional load.
Our philosophy is based on viewing the body as a connected, self-regulating system, rather than a collection of separate parts. This perspective guides every assessment and treatment decision we make.
Treating the Cause, Not Just the Location
Symptoms often appear in one area, but the cause may lie elsewhere.
For example:
- Shoulder pain may relate to breathing or posture
- Back pain may reflect how load is distributed during movement
- Fatigue may stem from prolonged nervous system stress
- Digestive or sleep issues may reflect impaired recovery
Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, we look for patterns of compensation, overload, and regulation that influence the body as a whole.
Regulation Before Strength or Correction
Modern life places constant demands on the body.
When stress or load exceeds recovery capacity, the nervous system often remains in a protective state.
In this state:
- Muscles stay tense
- Movement becomes inefficient
- Pain sensitivity increases
- Internal systems struggle to regulate
Our approach prioritizes regulation before correction. By helping the nervous system settle and adapt, the body becomes more responsive to movement therapy, exercise, and acupuncture.
Integration, Not Separation
Physiotherapy, acupuncture, and manual therapy are often offered as separate services. At Alter Physio & Acupuncture, they are integrated within a single clinical framework.
- Physiotherapy & Movement Therapy improves coordination and load tolerance
- Japanese Acupuncture supports nervous system regulation and recovery
- Japanese Osteopathy (Seitai) enhances whole-body balance and coordination
- Manual & Soft Tissue Therapy prepares the body to adapt more effectively
Each method is used with intention, based on what the body needs at that moment.
Gentle Does Not Mean Superficial
Many of our techniques are subtle, but this does not make them less effective.
We choose approaches that respect the body’s sensitivity and capacity to change, rather than forcing results. Sustainable improvement often comes from precise, well-timed input, not from intensity alone.
This philosophy allows treatment to be effective for both acute issues and long-standing conditions.
Long-Term Resilience Over Quick Fixes
Our goal is not only to reduce symptoms, but to help people:
- Move with greater ease
- Recover more efficiently
- Respond better to stress
- Maintain health over time
We value long-term resilience over short-term fixes, and education over dependency on treatment.
A Collaborative Process
Treatment at Alter Physio & Acupuncture is a collaborative process.
We take time to understand your experience, observe how your body responds, and adjust treatment as changes occur. You are not expected to fit into a predefined protocol.
Instead, care evolves as your body adapts.
Our Commitment
Our commitment is to provide care that is:
- Thoughtful and individualized
- Grounded in clinical reasoning
- Respectful of the body’s natural intelligence
- Integrated across disciplines
- Focused on sustainable health
This philosophy shapes every aspect of what we do—from assessment to treatment to long-term support.
